This is the first Murakami book that I've read and I must say that I fail to see what all the fuss is about. Maybe it's a case of having expectations so high that nothing could possibly come close to matching them. This is the story of Tsukuru. In high school he was close friends with four other people. I read this for a class on novels that have been translated. The assignment was about five chapters each week for five weeks, and I had a hard time not reading ahead to find out what happened to the main character. This is a very character-driven novel with not much action, but the protagonist, Tsukuru, grows a tremendous amount through the course of the novel.

Three and a half really. Once I hit a tipping point, I couldn't stop reading. Not that much happens in the novel even in the sense of self-discovery. It's more like a reawakening after a long sleep. Winter into Spring in Murakami form.

A. I love Haruki Murakami. This one is about Tsukuru, who had 4 friends in his youth who suddenly shut him out of the group and his search to discover why that happened. A wonderful journey.
