At the Mountains of Madness in Overdue Podcast

A team of scientific explorers heads to Antarctica to drill into the ground and discover...you know...whatever scientists discover. In this case, it was a lot of rock. And they were really excited about the rock. Then, Lake decides to go off and explore farther away with most of the crew and 50 sled dogs.

He sends back amazing reports. He's discovered these mountains and rocks that are new and unlike any ever discovered. The only problem is that the deeper they go, the more upset the dogs get. And they were really excited about the rock. Then, Lake decides to go off and explore farther away with most of the crew and 50 sled dogs.

He sends back amazing reports. He's discovered these mountains and rocks that are new and unlike any ever discovered. The only problem is that the deeper they go, the more upset the dogs get. They whine and bark and just generally don't want to be there. Then Lake discovers a new lifeform. Actually, he discovers 8 of them. He brings them all back to the surface and attempts to dissect two of them in order to discover if it's animal or vegetable. He does admit that the odor is really foul and MAN! Those darn dogs are just not liking these things.

After the attempted dissection, Lake determines that it's got traits of both animal and vegetation and they'll do some more studies in the morning. And then nothing. Our narrator and his colleagues go in search of Lake and find that everyone - all people and dogs - have been brutally murdered and the campsite has been trashed.

Everyone is freaked out but they all say aloud that it was a giant, scary windstorm that did all that...and also buried the dissected bodies. So the narrator and a fellow scientist decide to head into the mountains and discover what horrors lay below.

I thought the plot of the story was awesome. I thought that the first person narrative was a great idea. I did not like the dryness of the narrative. This is my first Lovecraft so I don't know if this is his usual style or something that he was adopting for the scientists, but it was boring and hard to read. They got really excited about the rocks and would talk about them a lot, but since I didn't understand I would get easily distracted.

Also, there was no conversation in the entire book. Since it was a first person narration in the form of a report, I can understand it, but it made it hard to relate to any of the characters. I actually went on wikipedia after I read the book to make sure that I hadn't missed any major plot points. I didn't!!

So I didn't really enjoy this and I wouldn't recommend it. ...more
