I swear I remember this being creepier. Maybe it was the narration; I believe Heather Ordover read it on her Craftlit podcast, and went for the creepy full tilt. Tom Mison did a lovely job of reading it (he can read me a story any time) (please), but in a fairly straightforward manner, and … well, it was all a practical joke, right?

2023: I've read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow several times, but this is the first time I took my time with it and read a portion of it in the dark. It was even better!
2020: I decided to read the hard copy of Sleepy Hollow this time around instead of listening to the audiobook. I paid more attention, and was rewarded with atmospheric spookiness and almost tangible descriptions of a haunted, Autumn village. Add all the sumptuous food, psychological scares, and a mysterious ending, and I call this b ...more

Sleepy Hollow is the classic story of the nerd and jock competing for the affection of the rich girl. The nerd gets friendzoned and then the jock terrorizes the nerd by throwing things at him as he is on his way home.

I found this collection of essays and stories to be quite engaging. His characters and settings are excellently portrayed.
My favorite stories were:
The Art of Book Making
The Country Church
Mutability of Literature - this was probably my favorite story. It’s about him taking refuge in the Westminster library and having a conversation with an old book he had taken down from the shelf
Also really enjoyed the series of Christmas themed stories: Christmas, The Stage Coach, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, ...more

For all the adaptations of this story, it was surprising to get into the original and realize how short and un-Horseman-focused it really is. It was very evocative of autumn; I love the descriptions of the landscape and foods.
Personally I'm inclined to take the more supernatural angle, considering its sibling tales. ...more
