I do not for one second wish to diminish the genius of Junot Diaz by awarding him anything lower than a five-star review. Junot Diaz is a universally acclaimed writer for a reason: he consistently brings the heavy-hitting goodness to the page. However, this collection felt a tad one-note (fair enough, they are linked short-stories) and I found myself to be uncomfortable with the casual portrayal of rampant infidelities.

Junot Diaz is one of the most unique voices in modern literature and this book seems so autobiographical. I loved how strong and and at the same time vulnerable this reads. My only complaint is that it's too short, I was definitely left wanting more. I recommend this to everyone, even if you're a white girl raised in the suburbs you can appreciate the spanish slang, you can appreciate love and loss.

The writing in this book is very good. I enjoyed the way the stories are set up and how it all ties together- HOWEVER- I found the protagonist to be intolerable. I get where he's coming from, obviously I'm reading the literal backstory of his life, but he was a shitty character and at each turn, after each story, I found myself wanting to read this book from the perspective of the women he wronged.
