What a phenomenal voice! The characters are complex, the writing is evocative and enveloping. I was completely absorbed in this book. Big themes tackled here (race, religion, etc.). I want to read it again it’s so layered.
Are people who aren’t particularly religious going to be into this? Perhaps not in the same was as a Christian would. I wouldn’t call this pleasure reading. At times it’s disturbing and violent. It’s uncomfortable and you just feel for these characters.

I finished this book several days ago and I feel like I’m still gasping for air. It’s brilliantly written, captivating, lyrical, and complex. At times, I was triggered (very heavy on religion & shame). But, even so, I couldn’t put it down. Happy to have read this one! Baldwin is a genius!
Baldwin keeps amazing me how he weaves these dense narratives and examinations of race, religion, generational strife, and much more within such a short novel.
