What a phenomenal voice! The characters are complex, the writing is evocative and enveloping. I was completely absorbed in this book. Big themes tackled here (race, religion, etc.). I want to read it again it’s so layered.
Are people who aren’t particularly religious going to be into this? Perhaps not in the same was as a Christian would. I wouldn’t call this pleasure reading. At times it’s disturbing and violent. It’s uncomfortable and you just feel for these characters.

Baldwin keeps amazing me how he weaves these dense narratives and examinations of race, religion, generational strife, and much more within such a short novel.
