This book was not what I was expecting. I really expected to be swept up in the characters and the love story (since it was made into a movie, which I have not seen), but I wasn't. It was much more philosophical than I was expecting and moved a little slow. I didn't feel like much was resolved. There were a lot of questions asked by the book, but not many answers.

Disturbing. Fascinating. Sad. The narrator engages in a lot of navel-gazing that felt real, but since he is confused about the situation he describes, so is the reader. Perhaps confused isn't the right word. The narrator doesn't know how to feel about Hanna and he is left in the dark about her motivations. The author raises interesting questions about responsibility - the responsibility one has to others, to society, to oneself. Moments of the book earned four stars for me, but overall the prose

Intense, moving and sad with complex and compelling characters. The choices of said characters and the subject matter really stay with you.
