As someone who was also in college in the 80s, I could relate to the lives, situations and struggles of the three main characters as they finish their time at Brown University. There were a few too many references to semiotics, philosophy and literature at first. Somehow I kept going. I wanted to find out what would happen with the three main characters. The part about maniac depression kept me interested as did Mitchell's travels in India, especially when he was working in Mother Teresa's hospi

I would probably have given this book two stars if I hadn't listened to the interview with the author at the end of the audiobook. He talked about how marriage was necessary, yet idealized, at the time of the Brontes and Jane Austen, and then claimed that we continue to subscribe to the idealized version of marriage. The plot of the novel involves Maddie, Leonard and Mitchell just as they are to graduate from Brown and follows them through the next year or two. Maddie's life becomes a bit of a t

This one took me awhile to get this book read as I found it to a bit of a struggle to get through and found myself going through each section breaking down how far I was into a section on a regular basis. Wow...This book took longer to read than most I've read lately. Not sure why. I enjoyed The Marriage Plot for a variety of reasons. At first, I enjoyed reading about the city in which I was born and grew up (Providence) and tried to imagine the confusing East Side streets (my childhood church is on Congdon St). After awhile, I really started to care about Madeline, Leonard, and Mitchell even though in real life I'd probably not like them very much.

Wow. Can't begin to express how much I enjoyed this novel. Loved the way that literature, semiotics, relationships (both real and fictitious/idealized) wound its way through the book. First book that I read of Jeffrey Eugenides. After finishing the reading challenge for 2011, I'll be revisiting this supremely talented writer. This book should definitely be a possibility for the Pulitzer!

I loved Jeffrey Eugenides' two other books. This one was written well but I thought the story was dull and I wasn't interested in the main female character. I enjoyed parts of it but it was a letdown after his other books.
