This is the only graphic novel on the 1001 Books list by the inventive author of V for Vendetta and The League of Extraordinary Gentleman. I've loved his use of what I'll call "speculative history" or alternate history in the past (although when it was first written it was pretty much present tense) as a way of pointing out humanity's flaws and the problems with extremist attitudes.

This was my first graphic novel. The story was very interesting. It's based on the premise that superheroes first came around in the 60's and they were ordinary people who were just vigilantes in disguises. The book opens when one of them is murdered. They've all gone their separate ways, but start to combine forces in an effort to find out who is trying to destroy them.
