Having it on good authority that this was a five-star-read I procured it without haste, forgoing my usual pre-selection process. Imagine my surprise when about 30% of the way in the book changes direction completely. At this point I realized that not only was it over seven hundred pages long, but the first of a trilogy.

I suddenly became uneasy with the commitment I had unknowingly made.

I attached easily to the characters. And enjoyed the ending, even though it was unsurprising. The writing was

A. So much character building for a vampire book.

I thought this book was great in the beginning, which tells us how the Western Hemisphere collapsed in a vampire like virus. Then it fasts forwards 100 years and turns into a post apocalyptic soap opera. It stays like this until the final third of the book when the main characters actually start to do things.

Great beginning, pretty good middle and end. Looking forward to vol 2.

This is not my usual genre and it’s a long book. I hung in until the end despite not liking the narration of the audiobook. It was a bit disturbing to read this in a post-pandemic world.
