Having it on good authority that this was a five-star-read I procured it without haste, forgoing my usual pre-selection process. Imagine my surprise when about 30% of the way in the book changes direction completely. At this point I realized that not only was it over seven hundred pages long, but the first of a trilogy.

I thought this book was great in the beginning, which tells us how the Western Hemisphere collapsed in a vampire like virus. Then it fasts forwards 100 years and turns into a post apocalyptic soap opera. It stays like this until the final third of the book when the main characters actually start to do things.

Long and epic, it took a little while to get going, and there was some character set up that seemed a bit excessive (I assume that it will pay off in books 2 & 3). This is not my usual genre and it’s a long book. I hung in until the end despite not liking the narration of the audiobook. It was a bit disturbing to read this in a post-pandemic world.
