So... maybe is because this book was written 10+ years ago or maybe it just wasn't for me, but I feel like there's so much better stories to be read about this specific topic.
A story set in the middle of the aids crisis in the 80s is not meant to be a happy one. However there's ways in which it can lead to a hopeful ending. This story did not. It feels like there's zero character growth. Characters are just selfish and awful :(
