This my first Hemingway story and honest I'm surprised it took this long. The old man and the sea is a vivid and beautifully written story of a fisherman's epic battle to catch a huge marlin. I just loved Hemingway's writing. Also I listen to the the audiobook narrated by Donald Sutherland. He did an excellent job. Wonderful story. ...more

The Old Man and the Sea is a great work of literature set in Cuba by Ernest Hemingway. Santiago, the protagonist of this book is down on his luck; 'Salao, the worst form of unlucky.' His strength of mind, however, helps him with hooking the largest marlin in the water. The secondary character of the book is Manolin, a young boy whom is Santiago's only friend.

The Old Man and the Sea is written in a realistic tone with a third person omniscient narrator.

》Accomplishment: The bulk of the story describes the fight between lonely fisherman Santiago and a extraordinarily large marlin. Hemingway uses this fight as a symbol of man’s strength and pride. Man's honour forces a fight to the end, not giving up, even though the mind is struggling with the thought of giving up. But the old man is strong and giving up on the fight mean defeat. The old man 'killed him for pride" and his bad luck ended with his success over the dead marlin.
》Santiago’s friendship with Manoli: Manolin symbolizes pure love and compassion, he also symbolizes the circle of life. Manolin is so young yet he loves Santiago and takes care of him. When Santiago is near death in the boat, he uses the boy as something to hold onto.
》Hemingway symbolises challenge with the marlin. Santiago had to accept the marlin’s power and strength. He was impressed by the marlin's strength and grace. Only because of Santiago's appreciation for the beautiful Marlin was he was able to defeat it.
》Lions: The lions Satiago dreams about symbolise his lost youth as well as his pride.
》Hope: The Old Man and the Sea story teaches us not to give up, particularly when the fight may seem senseless.
》Sea: The sea is used as a symbol to represent life and its hardships. The sea, with its daunting width and depth, simply stands for life itself. It may be quite calm, but it can become raging and even deadly in an instant.

Read The Old Man and the Sea because it is a literary classic that is well written and full of meaning and symbolism. It is a great and quick read; one of Hemingway's finest works. ...more
