I wish I had read this before seeing the movie, which I also really liked. The movie is pretty faithful to the book in terms of characters, setting, and atmosphere. If I hadn't known what was going to happen, I would have been much more intrigued about where the plot was going, but even so I was still taken aback by the language, values, and violence of the characters and towns.

Brutal. Harsh. Unforgiving.
Am I describing the Ozark landscape or Ree Dolly's family? SPOILER ALERT: Both.
I love a small book that packs a powerful punch. At just under 200 pages, this book fit the bill. Ree Dolly is a tough yet compassionate character. When her meth cooking father skips his court date, Ree learns that he put up the house as collateral. A very dark and semi bleak novel of a teenage girl forced into an adult situation. An eerie and tragic tale of the main character trying to find her runaway father in the vicious backwoods of the Ozark landscape where other people hold stubborn dispositions and iron clad values that can escalate into life or death situations for the main character.
