This book reminded me a lot of The Imperfectionists since it focuses on multiple characters connected via one subject, in this case the more general subject of music. The book description was a bit misleading as I was expecting the perspectives to only be from Sasha and Bennie, but I did appreciate how rounded these two characters became through the eyes of different characters that were loosely associated with them during different points of their lives. However, I didn't really care for or con ...more

this book was really fantastic, but there is something about the last chapter that pushes it up to pretty amazing. I loved it.

I'm going through the list of books I've read this year and trying to write at least a short review for most of them. I'm startled to see that I gave this book 5 stars because I'm struggling right now to remember what the book was about or why I liked it so much. That's probably an indictment, but I must have enjoyed reading it at the time.

I thought I would be giving this four stars, and then I got to the much-discussed power point chapter and had no choice but to give this book five stars. The emotion conveyed in that chapter is breath taking. The book - basically a collection of inter-locking short stories - is not a happy one, but it's deeply human, and I was enthralled. ...more

I liked this book a lot. I felt absorbed from the first chapter where we meet Sasha on her therapist's couch. I put it down for a little while to do some schoolwork and I wish I hadn't, because I had trouble keeping track of all the interlocking characters after that. It was a beautifully written book. I think I will read it again in a little bit to see how it all fits together. ...more

Definitely a unique and worthwhile reading experience. One of, if not the, best book I read in 2010. So glad to hear that Egan won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction!

That actual narrative was only marginally interesting to me (though I loved the bits in 202- as they were an interesting view of our tech future) but I loved the narrative structure.

I really, really tried to like this book, but for whatever reason I really didn't like it. A large part of the reason that I didn't like the book was that I never knew what year it was or were the story was taking place. It just left me very confused and after about 80 pages, I gave up reading it. ...more

Almost too trendy. Almost too many characters. Almost too pretentious. Almost too depressing. But wow, what a story of the passing of time tackled with with immense talent.
