I could blame this on timing again (I'm on vacation this time), but I'm not sure Jane Austen and 19th century literature is really for me in most cases. It's just so...linear. Which isn't how my brain works at all. Anyway, I really like the main idea/story in this of Anne and Wentworth's relationship, but it takes up a small amount in this book? It's only 250 pages, and the main tension doesn't come in until like 50-60 pages. There's a lot of backstory at the beginning, and once it seems to be g ...more

I don't know if it's the so-called "Covid brain," but I managed to make it through the whole audiobook while absorbing maybe 5 - 10% of the contents. I admit that giving a Jane Austen novel 2 stars pains me. I will love her to the end of time, but this particular novel let me down. Everything unfolded at a snail's pace. The characters, writing and pacing of this story are amazing. Persuasion differs from Austen's earlier works in that the majority of the story is told through Anne Elliot's eyes, therefore the reader is often not privy to scenes and information Anne's character does not experience. This narration device, and the fact that Anne Elliot is no Dashwood, Bennet, Price or Woodhouse, give Persuasion an entirely different feel from Austen's other novels, and not in a bad way!! ...more

I reread this Austen as an entry into the New Year. While not my favorie, it possesses all the usual humor of an Austen novel, and a mature protagonist Anne Elliot who has grown into her character. A good read for a new year.
