Oy. Awful. Pi, the main character, is an annoying little precocious jerk who feels like he's probably wiser than everyone around him. The book revels in this, like a proud papa, and lets him prattle on about his superiority for a hundred pages or so (or maybe it just seemed that way). Then some horrible, grisly, gruesome things happen. Suddenly the book went from annoying to disturbing. And not in a good way. I very much enjoyed this fantastical tale. The first part containing the introduction to Pi and his world was a little slow, but necessary to set the stage and thankfully wasn't longer than it needed to be. The second part is where the book took off and drew me in once the action hit the open water. All of Pi's experiences in the lifeboat were thrilling to read about, even the parts that were unpleasant to visualize, and there were many interesting surprises along the way. The third part had a n
