The power of fiction to describe reality
The only war fiction I've been exposed to have been movies - and I've watched very few of those. This is a powerful novel, and surprising to me, as the POV is from a German soldier in WWI. Several years ago I read "The Things They Carried," about a soldier's experience in Vietnam. The greatest war novel of all time, as the book jacket claims? I'm not sure, since I've barely scratched the surface when it comes to this particular genre. However, I did find the scope of this book to be fairly impressive along with the examination of war's effect on the psyche. The combat portions are harrowing and gory, but perfectly communicate how chaotic and terrifying fighting on the front line must be. In comparison, a visit home provides its own quiet agony for Paul. 4.75 Took me about half of the book to get into the book, but once I had gotten half-way through, I got hooked; excellent read!
