this book didn't really offer much past its interesting premise. kameron hurley clearly has a vivid imagination, but didn't manage to showcase her ideas in a way that i found particularly accessible or engaging. the worldbuilding was overwhelming in its complexity, and i just found it all very confusing and unnecessarily hard to follow. the plot was tenuous at best, and the characters (of which there were far!!! too! many!) were thoroughly dull. the characters i found myself gravitating toward t

I wanted to like this book so much more than I did.
Let me start by saying that I thought the world-building was brilliant. Hurley clearly has a fantastic imagination; her inventiveness shines. The setting of the novel is quite honestly the best thing about it, as is the unorthodox portrayal of gender and gender roles. This world is truly unique and original.
