Dear Martin is an exceptional story that will appeal to those who loved The Hate U Give. The book delves into the much needed conversation needed today around the topics of racism, discrimination and racial profiling. Narrated by Justyce, (poignant choice of words), it highlights a range of perspectives that bring truth to being a young black teenager trying to make sense of the friendships and struggles in the world around him.

4.5 stars overall - bumped due to feels factor aka ability to make me cry
This is such a timely, important little YA novel. It has a lot of great qualities: a cast of brightly written characters, an easy going feel to the writing that also happens to pack a powerful punch in terms of civil rights and race relations. I think it is a wonderful book for young readers especially as it has low sexual content but a lot of cultural important topics. And obviously, the awesome letters Justyce rights to D ...more

This is a really important book that tells a compelling story about compelling characters. The writing/point of view really drove me bonkers, though. 2-stars for the writing, 3-stars for everything else.
*this is a YA book and I think teenagers will enjoy it more than I did, bc you know... I judge when it comes to writing quality.

Perfect companion novel to The Hate You Give, this one is told from the perspective of a young black male. His background and aspirations are similar to Starr’s but being a young man in the moment increases the anxiety and fear you feel while reading it. I admired Justyce’s search for a connection with Dr. King and where that search led him.
