What Members Thought

A realistic, touching story about chasing the "American dream" and those who can't find it, no matter how hard they try. Interesting insights into family, class, immigration, race...would be a great book club selection.

I'm happy that Oprah has chosen this novel for her book club and may reread it so I can join in the current discussion. I learned a lot from this novel. A lot about an immigrant's attraction to and perspective on America and what the realities of asylum, green cards, finding a job, supporting family here and at home, and sometimes failure can do to people.

I thought this book did a great job showing a very realistic and what felt like a very authentic portrayal of what it means to be an immigrant in this country and how difficult it is to try and get a green card and to follow the legal paths to working. The characters were very human and relatable. I really felt badly for the women.
