This book is so desperately important and so desperately needed and should be part of the experience of ANY white person wanting to read outside their comfort zone. Even though, intellectually, you can know that the reasons for inner city poverty and violence are multi-faceted, hearing it in Starr's voice makes it infinitely more real. It underscores the lack of services, the lack of choice and the lack of justice communities like hers face.

There are important books. Then there are good books and/or enjoyable books. This book happens to be both, and it truly earns all the praise it's received.
This book handles racism, sexism, abuse, growing up, family ties, and so much more, and it does it all in a seamless, believable way. It allows you to both sympathize, and empathize with the characters. It is a strong book, and often gut wrenching, but for almost every down stroke, there is an upswing, something positive or good.

Starr keeps her two worlds separate until she can't anymore and becomes the activist she truly is. This YA novel is a perfect read for all young people (and those not so young) struggling with all the injustices we continue to witness and are unsure how to address.
