At another time in my life I may have enjoyed this more, but not today. If it were not a book club book, I probably would have put it down and tried to read it at another time, but not now.

I do think that there's a charming story in this book, I just didn't feel like wading through so much miasmas to get there. I did really like Else, but she's not really eight.

3.5 stars. This was a sweet story about a special bond between a grandmother and granddaughter, including a fairy tale which is a part of the story, and a cast of interesting and funny characters. A nice book to read at the end of the day.

This is one of the best books I've ever read! What it made me feel is the book version of what the movie Little Miss Sunshine made me feel---it is so innocent (told through the eyes of an almost-eight-year-old) but so deep and wise and insightful about how complicated human beings are.
