3.75 stars. Beautiful generational picture book story centered around a young girl planting and tending to a seed. (view spoiler)

There's plenty to like in this quiet picture book about a young girl carefully planting a seed. We see her patience and wonder as the seed grows into a bountiful tree that will be enjoyed for generations. The illustrations are gorgeous but sometimes a little confusing about what is in the past and what is in the present, but otherwise this is a comforting story that connects the love of nature with a loving community.

This was such a great read as I ate leftover pecan pie. I can see teachers using it for so many units from preschool to middle grades. Author's Note and Illustrator's Notes should not be missed. As always Daniel Miyyares illustrations extend the text and history.

Yes books about planting trees have been done before, but I'm not sure I've seen a book about planting a tree quite like this. The writing is lyrical and playing with time - jumping from effect to cause, past to present. The layers quality to the illustrations is lovely and warm inviting readers into Nell's world.

5/14/2023 ~ A stunningly illustrated homage to family, growing things, and legacy. Plant a tree now for future generations. Watch how the illustrations ground you in time as the tree grows.

Beautiful illustrations enhance the story of planting a tree for future generations as the young girl enjoys the pleasures of the current tree. Having seen many pecan trees growing I found this to be a very satisfying read. Illustrations done in pen and ink, gouache, and collage are Caldecott worthy.
