Two things immediately sprang to mind when I first held this book in my hands. (I had no preconceptions about the story.) The car on the cover reminded me of the one my parents had when I was a little girl. The car was with us for a very long time because my parents did not believe in loans or mortgages. If you didn't have the money for something, you did not get it or you started saving until you could afford it. If something went wrong on the car, my dad could make it right. While I liked the story, the illustrations earned this book a five star rating. Curato's vibrant illustrations made Cuba come alive in this story. The author and illustrator notes bring the book home. ...more

As more Americans are traveling to Cuba for pleasure, this book highlights what many visitors are noticing - the old cars that have been kept running for many years. I think children will find it interesting since a 30 year old car in the U.S. rarely exists!

A fun adventure through Cuba in a family car. This would be a great book to teach figurative language. The back story is just as interesting as the book.
