Maybe I would have liked history classes more if the teachers had included interesting tidbits like these dazzle ships, and the story of the bear that became Winnie-the-Pooh. Instead they trotted out boring details like dates, countries involved, battles fought, etc., making history for me, at least, a dry and dusty subject.

Barton tells a compelling story about a little know historical event. He does a great job simplifying a complex time period without diluting or misrepresenting the facts. With dazzling illustrations, this is an informative and inspiring picture book that celebrates problem-solving and creativity.

I knew nothing about this until I read this book. This brilliant idea shows how the arts can be far more helpful than most people realize.

Visually beautiful, intriguing and mildly esoteric

Absolutely fascinating! I had never heard of the dazzle ships before. What an interesting piece of history! I truly cannot believe the ships were created, how cool that they worked. This would be a great book to share during WWI units or even in art classes when talking about illusion or camouflage.

I loved this mostly because it tells a story I didn't know and I think will be fun to share with kids. I didn't have time to devote to the great back matter, but I think the kids will.
