The book as a whole doesn't overwhelm me, but in this case it is the individual parts that make it extraordinary! The illustrations are finely detailed and interesting. While not always pleasing to the eye, per se, they are captivating! The invented language is perfect in its simplicity. Even without knowing the language it is easy to figure out the intent of the spoken words. That realization is a gift in and of itself. I thought this book was a lot of fun. It's unique, that's for sure! The made-up bug language is entertaining, and I'm sure kids will love trying to figure it out. The illustrations are gorgeous. I can imagine the Caldecott committee will be having discussions over it! Du Iz Tak?

I wanted to like this more. It's creative and interesting, and as much as I was able to understand what they were saying as time went on, it just didn't quite do it for me. It might be more fun to read with a child. Read for grad school for Lit & Resources for Children.

Two Solid Stars! (and that is generous) Okay the made up language was good, but it was distracting. I was trying too hard to figure out the made up words that I couldn't focus on the pictures and figure out the story! I actually got lost and just read the book without words and it sort of made sense. The illustrations are lovely and Caldecott worthy but the story was a waste of my time! It would be have been better if there were no words at all. I personally don't even like made up words
