I might have to upgrade this one to five stars. When I first read it myself, I thought it was interesting and cute but not *amazing.* But I read it with my students and they LOST their minds over it. They loved guessing what the words meant and laughing at the funny sounds. So maybe five stars...

What a clever concept! Even though the words are made up, the gouache and ink illustrations help the reader figure out what the made up words probably mean. I found the illustrations very appealing. Unusual and unique.

12/30/2016 ** Requested from IndyPL; on the Nerdy 2016 Picture Book list. This book must have been a sleeper. IndyPL originally had just 2 copies, though now there are about a dozen more on order, and the wait list is still 10 long. More than half the copies in the Evergreen system are out right now. I look forward to reading it when it finally comes in!

Strange and yet simple. The illustrations are whimsical, while the made up language keeps you guessing. This would be a nice one-on-one read.

I wanted to like this more, love the idea, love the artwork.

I can see why this was honored with a 2017 Caldecott -- the illustrations are gorgeous, and the book itself is quite clever. Lots of possibilities for young ones to use their narrative skills to tell you what is actually happening in the story.

The only thing that I didn't care for much was the gibberish bug language. In one respect I can see why it was done, but I think this book would have probably been just as effective as a wordless picture book. Illustrations get 5/5, overall book 3/5.

Not sure what to think of this, but might work well in talking to older students about inference. I can see how ever person doing this as a read aloud would do it differently. Wonder if there is a reading with either Colin Maloy or Carson Ellis reading it, with music? Guess it needs more time before I can be fair to it, but unfortunately I'll have to take it back to the library today.
