Told in a completely made-up language, readers in Du Iz Tak will have to spend a lot of time reading the pictures to interpret the story. But with Carson Ellis's beautiful and endearing illustrations, readers will have no problem with that. I could see this book being a Caldecott contender.

To tell the truth, the gibberish language rubbed me the wrong way. The illustrations were cute, but I'd have preferred this as a wordless picture book.

I'm torn between a 4 and a 5 on this one, but it is refreshingly different and creative. While the text relies on invented language, it isn't that hard to figure out what the bugs are saying, partly because the language is close enough to other languages for readers to guess, but also because the illustrations speak volumes. When a tiny shoot is discovered by different types of insects they are amazed to watch it grow and make grand plans for a fort. An invented language is used to tell the story, though the reader can also read the story wordlessly too as there are multiple storylines portrayed in each gouache and ink illustrated spread.
As the seasons change, the plant grows, changes, and spreads seeds which results in even more surprises in the spring.
