What Members Thought
I had THE BEST storytime experience reading this book. It was slow, contemplative, and the perfect amount of silly. The kids noticed details and patterns and really engaged with the story, and I had tons of fun doing my best buggy impressions. Su! Su! SU!
I am interested to try this with a group. But I think it might work best for individual exploration.
February 2017 - on my first read through I thought this was interesting but not amazing, but after it got a Caldecott honor I thought I'd try it again on Ben. Last week at work I had an adult patron asking me about Carson Ellis' picture books and my opinion on how well they work with actual children. We enjoyed guessing what these critters were saying and watching their miniscule community assemble through the seasons in this charmingly illustrated book.
I recently ran into the Spider from Carson Ellis' Du Iz Tak? (view spoiler) It had a question for me, and I have answered it below. I read this wonderfully strange book with my classes and they enjoyed figuring out the meaning of the story. I recommend you read this book with young people and then read the interview below!
