What Members Thought
I thought the silly story and the comic watercolor illustrations were perfectly matched in this Caldecott Honor award book. I especially thought that the white on black illustrations of the old woman in the wormhole were clever. I also liked seeing the children--all thirty of them--wearing their newly knitted sweaters at the end. The story reminded me a bit of It Could Always Be Worse: A Yiddish Folk Tale, except in this story, the woman left all the chaos instead of adding to it.

LOVED this. Possibly one of my favorite picture books of all time, although I say that a lot. I related so much to the main character, an old woman who just wants some peace and quiet to knit. I laughed out loud, especially when she goes through a worm hole into the void to get away from everyone bothering her. And the ending was fantastic. I will definitely buy this for my library. I think kids would laugh at it, and it would be great for a storytime.
Who doesn't want a black hole to slip into to escape too many children? And who isn't delighted to return to those too many children when the work is done? This grandmother - who loves her quiet house and the also loves the chaos that grandchildren bring! Enjoy!

Assuredly the funniest picture book about a knitting grandma that you're likely to find.
