There is something special about this book.
What a wonderful pick for the Caldecott! I have been anxiously waiting to get my hands on it and now I have tears in my eyes at the end of the story. I have always adored Sophie Blackall's artwork and last year my pick for the Caldecott was The Baby Tree, which she wrote and illustrated. Finding Winnie is a beautiful story about friendship and bears. And what a cool true story about the origins of Winnie-the-Pooh that I never knew before! Is it strange ...more

Much more interesting visually than the other Winnie book this year. Blackall's illustrations were superb. I was charmed by the spot illustration of Colebourn on his horse looking over the fall leaves--the picture had almost no narrative to add to the story, but instead added a note of melancholy and thoughtfulness to the spread. This nonfiction narrative is brilliantly done. It begins with the mother telling her young child a story about a bear. This narrative is interspersed with the mother's telling about Harry Colebourn and how he found and kept The baby bear who came to be known as Winnie the Pooh. Sophie Blackwell's illustrations are just bloody gorgeous. I also enjoyed the photographs at the end of the book.

I'm not sure this will be a long term favorite of mine. I like the story more than the art work. Congrats to Blackall on the award, as there was definitive amount of work in this book. The details are excellent for the medium.
