Previous JF books I’ve read (Magus, FLW, Ebony tower, Collector) brought me here as I enjoyed the reading immensely. For me this is not my favourite, but there are some stunning moments with fantastic writing as you might expect. Not my favourite book, but, well written and enjoyable all the same.

It's not Fowles' finest by a long way, but reading this novel merely emphasises that Fowles at his least interesting is (was) still superior writer to a million other authors at their best; and therefore impossible to give fewer than four stars.
