What Members Thought
This is really an outstanding, moving book. The way the author tied together the struggles of slaves with the struggles of women -- trapped in body compared to trapped in mind, or the minds of others, to paraphrase -- was interesting and frustrating and revelatory. I was so disappointed with The Mermaid Chair, and am happy and relieved that this book entranced me as much as The Secret Lives of Bees did.
