The description of this book on Goodreads does it a disservice...but maybe that's intentional. The conflict, the crime at the heart of the story is really just a jumping off point for a frank, honest, no-holds-barred discussion of racism. I read an Advanced Reader's Copy / uncorrected proof.
This was the first Jodi Picoult book I've read. I have stacks of them, but hadn't been inspired to pick one up before.
A sharp, compelling, relevant read.
Somewhat of a rubric for my rating:
Good writing quality? Very good. I was impressed with the writing and the way the author took on tough topics.
Was I hooked? Yes. I could not put it down, and despite its length, I moved through it rapidly. I felt "at the edge of my seat." It began strong, ...more
