The description of this book on Goodreads does it a disservice...but maybe that's intentional. The conflict, the crime at the heart of the story is really just a jumping off point for a frank, honest, no-holds-barred discussion of racism. The book deals with the discomfort surrounding those discussions for white people, people of privilege who do not see ourselves as racist because we don't have swastikas tattooed on our scalps. I read an Advanced Reader's Copy / uncorrected proof.
This was the first Jodi Picoult book I've read. I have stacks of them, but hadn't been inspired to pick one up before.
A sharp, compelling, relevant read.

Somewhat of a rubric for my rating:
Good writing quality? Very good. I was impressed with the writing and the way the author took on tough topics.
