I was not a fan of this book at all. I only managed to make it about a quarter of the way through before I got tired of it. I tried to make myself read more, but I found it to be impossible. This book, in my opinion, is very overhyped. I didn't like the characters and I didn't like the plot. I had a very hard time keeping track of the characters. Truthwitch by Susan Dennard had been on my tbr list since its release last year, so when I saw it, along with Windwitch, at BigW for a bargain price I was beyond happy and purchased them without a second thought. Other than being about witches (duh) I had no idea what to expect from this book, though from the love it’s been receiving on social media I pitched my bar quite high.

Shelves: fantasy

This book had a slow start for me, but that was due to the way the author built/introduced the world. She throws you right in and you have to figure things out yourself and gradually you learn/understand more about it. After I got past that point, and I'm not quite sure where that point was, past 100 pages though, but I totally got into it and I could not put it down. The world is just so unique, I can't quite compare it to any other popular series. It is definitely high fantasy though. After I got past that point, and I'm not quite sure where that point was, past 100 pages though, but I totally got into it and I could not put it down. The world is just so unique, I can't quite compare it to any other popular series. It is definitely high fantasy though. I think I would have a hard time describing certain types of witchery to people though, especially Threadwitchery. That one took me forever to wrap my head around, but I stuck to it to trudge right through. It actually is amazing since it allows me to be really excited for Iseult's (the Threadwitch) point of view chapters because I want to see how other characters are feeling and what their threads are doing. It created so many teases for romance between Iseult's Threadsister, Safi, and the ship Captain they run into (Merik).

Going off that, the characters are great as well. I love the relationships between the Threadfamily-- Safi and Iseult; and Merik and Kullen. It's great to have a novel that focuses on strong friendships. I kinda wish that we got to see some more "magic" or effects that thread-family can create, but right now it just seems that they are best friends who always have each others' backs and will risk their lives to protect each other. I also love how romance was approached in this-- it is what I want for a romance. It teases the reader and mostly the book focuses on developing the world and setting the stage for the plot for future books in the series, but just that little bit keeps me on the edge of my seat. And since I know it is not the focus of the book it always leaves me wondering of what is going to happen between the characters.

By the way, there is an antihero in the plot as well-- he is a bloodwitch. I think he may become my favorite character down the line-- I am a sucker for those types. Right now though, Merik is probably my favorite (though Kullen is a close 2nd).

It will be a long wait for the next novel, but I am sure it will be worth it! ...more
