This book was such a joy to read. I'm not going to lie. I was smiling like a fool the entire time. THE ENTIRE TIME.

There were characters that I liked;such as Khlaid, Despina, and the Rajput. Overall I enjoyed Jalal as a character even though he did irk me at times. But as for the rest of the characters and even some of the world building; I was not always a fan. I felt like the magic system wasn't very fleshed out and there wasn't much explanation on how it worked.

Very conflicted on this one. This had a lot of redeeming qualities but also some things I had issues with that I think others have mentioned a lot too.

Things I liked:
-The setting was amazing! Ahdieh is fantastic at introducing cultures in YA that never normally get included. The imagery and descriptive techniques were amazing and I specifically liked the hall that (view spoiler)

I didn’t think I was enjoying this and I wasn’t really getting into it, and then all of a sudden I was hooked. I love Khalid and Shazi, the romance is beautiful. Not really liking Tariq very much which I’m surprised about. I didn’t think I’d say this but I can’t wait to pick up the next book and get reading tomorrow.

I have so much mixed feelings about this. But I liked this book, it’s more like a 3’21 stars. I had some issues with it obviously. The first being that sometimes I felt I was reading something I had already read before, some scenes felt so much like scenes from other books I had already read. Just like the characters. Though I love Khalid, I couldn’t keep thinking he was just like Warner from the Shatter me trilogy. And Tariq was Adam.

I have so much mixed feelings about this. But I liked this book, it’s more like a 3’21 stars. I had some issues with it obviously. The first being that sometimes I felt I was reading something I had already read before, some scenes felt so much like scenes from other books I had already read. Just like the characters. Though I love Khalid, I couldn’t keep thinking he was just like Warner from the Shatter me trilogy. And Tariq was Adam.

There were so many clichés, and you knew what was going to happen at the end from the very first word. Also, talking about the first word, at the beginning Shahrzad wouldn’t stop thinking “I hate him” “I must remember how much I loathe him” etc. It felt so forced, like the author was trying too hard to make you see that she hates him for reasons and how it was going to develop. And don’t even get me started on the instalove. Literally they love each other from the very first day. I think these things could have been made some different way, written more slowly, leaving time to sink in. But no.
There was this particular cliché at page 250 when I thought “okay, bye to the three stars hi to one star” because it was the cliché I hate THE MOST. BUT! You can’t name it a cliché because nothing happens about it. Really, that surprised me specially being the first book Renée writes and new authors tend to use clichés because they work. That change amazed me and made me like the book a bit more.

There were other scenes that seemed out of place. It seemed the author was dropping that information there, were it had no logic, because she was going to need it later.

I think what proceeds now is talking about the characters. I didn’t feel connected go any character alive. It was surprising how I only felt connected to Shiva, Shahrzad’s dead best friend.
I already wrote that Khalid felt like a copy of Warner, and yes, of course I fell for him, but no one can beat Warner.
Shahrzad was... I don’t know. I liked her and she is as silver tongued as I am but I didn’t feel connection.
Jalal was funny and I liked him though not as much as Khalid.
Despina was the I liked the most. She was so funny. I loved her.
The rest of the characters aren’t worth my time to talk about them.

The writing. Ah, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. It was okay since this is the first book of an author (I think, I actually haven’t checked. Shame on me.) But she tended to repeat herself. She used the word “alas” so many times that if I had to tattoo on my skin every time she wrote it, I would be in need of more skin and I am 1’83m tall.

As I already wrote, the ending felt predictable. I think I even know how the next book is going to go. We’ll have to wait and see though I don’t think I will be reading it any time soon. I think one of the biggest reasons I feel this way about this book is because of my reading slump.
