I loved this book! It was a great and enticing read.

The characters were amazing and well developed especially Baz and Penelope.
(I don't know if it was Rowell's intent but I really really didn't like Agatha like she made me cringe.)

A lot of the events were predictable which is why this book is not making it to my 6 stars shelves as I hoped it would.

I've found it really difficult to gather my thoughts and have proper discussions on Carry On, in all honesty, I have no idea why I like it so much. I know that doesn't sound like something worth five stars, (4.8) but I really really loved it. The characters feel developed right from the start, like they've grown and been on a journey together, which they have, seven books worth. I've found it really difficult to gather my thoughts and have proper discussions on Carry On, in all honesty, I have no idea why I like it so much. I know that doesn't sound like something worth five stars, (4.8) but I really really loved it. The characters feel developed right from the start, like they've grown and been on a journey together, which they have, seven books worth. I was worried that starting from what's meant to be the finale in a long running saga would feel like trying to enter into a super tight and bound friendship group, kind of like in school when all your best friends are all somehow absent on the same day, so you go talk to other friends. They are friends, but they aren't your best friends, not the ones you share everything with, you are talking to the people in this group and it's all friendly and everyone's laughing, but sometimes you don't pick up on that inside joke, or something is brought up that makes them all share a look, a look acknowledging some deeply hidden secret that you couldn't possibly understand. Anyway I'm going off on a tangent, but I'm just trying to paint a picture, if what I wrote felt relatable then rest assured that that is not what it feels like when you're reading this book. Rowell does such a good job of introducing you slowly into her new creation, many Watford stories are recounted and by the end you almost do feel like you've read seven other Simon Snow novels and have finally reached the grand ending. Perhaps that's a bit exaggerated, you won't feel like you've just finished Harry Potter, but you'll feel something, there's some kind of emotion in there. The dynamic between almost every character is so good and they just feel lifelike, the only relationship I wasn't really into was between the Mage and Simon. It feels like they're meant to be close, but they hardly communicate throughout the entire 500 pages and when they do, there isn't any real affectionate feeling emanating off of either of them, it just seems strictly professional. I also need to talk about the anticipation and the reward that comes with it. You eagerly await a character's return or the final pieces of the mystery to be put into place, and it pays off, to me this doesn't really happen enough in books, or just isn't handled properly. I wasn't loving this book for the first three quarters of it. I really really wanted to because I loved Fangirl and was really excited for this book but I felt like I couldn't connect to the story and I wasn't loving my reading experience.
I was going to give it 3.5 stars until I read the ending. The ending of this book is amazing and I couldn't stop reading it as all the mysteries were solved. I think it's genius to make this book a standalone fantasy as that is something rare and I like that t ...more
