I AM NOT HAPPY.

Why?

Because I just finished the most amazing fucking book and now I have to wait probably another year for the next one. Just kill me now.

I really can't explain how much this book just took the series to another level.

This book was insane, it was like 2 books in one. Because it was so long and so much happened, this review won't be very well structured or written because I can't put how I feel into words very effectively at all.

The Dorian chapters were utterly heartbreaking. It was horrible seeing him slowly lose himself, and forgetting who Sorcha was. I was laughing so hard when he was flirting with Manon though omg, I was like DORIAN SHE WILL EAT YOU. It was so nice when he had that interaction because it really brought the old Dorian to the surface and we haven't seen him happy in SO LONG. So yeah I'm on board with the Manon/Dorian ship... but also with the Manon/Elide ship... Not to forget the Manon/Asterin ship too.

KALTAIN OMFG. Her storyline was insane. SHE HAS SHADOWFIRE??? SHE ATE THE DEMON INSIDE HER WITH IT??? SHE HAD A WYRDKEY???? SHE HELPED MANON AND ELIDE???? SHE DIED???? Every part of her plot was amazing and I actually teared up when she sacrificed herself. It's hard to believe that this is the same woman that poisoned Celaena in book 1.

Lysandra is the best oh my I love her. I like the little budding flirtation with Aedion and she's SO COOL. I love that she can shapeshift I did not see that coming at all! I definitely feel like she's filling the Nehemia shaped hole in my heart.

Chaol pissed me off to no end. He was acting like it was completely Aelin's fault that he fucked everything up in Ardalan while she was in Wendlyn, when HE WAS THE ONE WHO MADE HER LEAVE. It was so ridiculous for him to be angry at her when she wouldn't have left if he hadn't arranged it so that she literally had to. Chaol annoyed me in Heir of Fire because he was so flimsy, but in this, I could not deal with him. I totally understand why people think Sarah wrote him out of character, but personally I think it makes sense for him to be acting out. He's lost his job and his best friend and Aelin was the catalyst who caused everything to change so he no doubt associates all those negative things with her. There's also the issue that Chaol has been raised to hate magic and fae. He is scared of them and has been indoctrinated to think that they are wrong and illegal so that most likely leads to his discomfort around Aelin. I personally think he should just build a bridge and get the fuck over it. Dorian did and he had way more reason than Chaol to oppose Aelin.
I do however think that by the end of this book, old Chaol was back and when he nearly died at the end I was still scared for him.

At the start of this book I felt really sorry for Aelin. It felt like she was so alone with no one on her side. After battling with her self image so much in Heir of Fire, I felt like she really needed someone to pick her up to stop her falling into that depressive state. Chaol hated her, Rowan was gone, Nehemia is dead, Dorian was possessed. The closest person she had to a friend was Arobynn and Nesryn. So the Aedion reunion could not come quick enough for me. I had been anticipating this for the whole of Heir of Fire and it was SO COOL. I can't get over how clever Aelin was when she spilled that water on the wyrdmarks! And then when Aedion was talking to her and acting like she was the best thing he'd ever seen it made me so happy!

THEN my bae came back and oh man I cannot stress how happy that made me. Rowan and Aelin are by far my favourite characters and it was so sweet when he came back! I shipped Rowan and Aelin in Heir of Fire but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think it would actually happen! But it makes sense that the time apart made Aelin realise how much she can't live without him awwwwww. I still am not convinced that Rowan is endgame though, I still think she will somehow end up with Dorian but I would be SO FINE if either of those things happen!

I was really happy with the way the Arobynn parts of the book played out. I was so scared when he slipped the ring on her I was like HOW is she getting out of this??? But she tricked him and I was so proud of her!

I loved the Manon chapters so much. Elide was such an interesting character and I really hope she can find Aelin with the wyrdkey. I love how much of a good influence she's had on Manon as well that was so nice to see! At the end of Heir of Fire when Manon killed the Crochan witch, I think it showed that although she knew it was wrong, she wasn't ready to change yet, but in this book she really started making positive changes. I can't wait until she kills her granny :)

THE FUCKING AELIN MANON MEETING WAS AMAZING. I've been waiting since Crown of Midnight for that Baba Yellowlegs thing to catch up with her and it finally did! When Aelin saved Manon I was like YES. I didn't know what to think in that fight because I love Manon and Aelin so much that I was just so conflicted. I really want the witches to be besties and part of Aelin's court, that would be so cute.

The final battle was the most overwhelming thing ever. It was so emotional when Aelin was trying to get through to Dorian and he wouldn't listen and when they were holding hANDS AND LOOKED LIKE GODS!!!! I was so happy my dream team were reunited and I hope Dorian can get back to the way he used to be because I miss his sassy back and forth with Aelin. I also love how he doesn't have any issue with her at all he just instantly calls her Aelin and is completely fine because he's such a good person...(Chaol I'm lookin at you bro, get it together)

The king after the demon came out of him messed me up. I was so confused. I feel like Perrington was always quite submissive to the king though so I'm not sure I quite believe him. I kind of think that Erawan is more likely to be inside Mauve or someone??????

OKay so there is a LOT to be said about this book. Like many I have given this book 5 stars mainly due to the fact that I have been hooked into this series and that in the end Sarah J Maas can write a really gripping plot. I loved the Manon chapters so much more in this book and liked how it started to really tie into the main story arc. Dorian broke my heart. But then there was the Aelin and Chaol dynamic. I knew this book was going to be amazing but it went beyond my expectations! By far the best book in the series and definitely my favourite book of this year! Loved every part of it and the characters just made it perfect. Really liked Chaol and Aedion a lot more in this book and loved Dorian and Rowan just as much. "Let's go rattle the stars."

I am in awe of Sarah. The story is so complex. The way it's told, you never know what's about to happen, what the plan is, what's about to go wrong, or if the plan going wrong was actually the plan all along. It's an exciting, thrilling, emotional ride, and I'm enjoying it immensely.
Also, where can I find a Rowan of my own?
