I enjoyed most of the book although began to skip paragraphs towards the end. It is a bit 'daft' but fun to read. One thing has niggled at me since. When Flora telephoned Charles from the phone box, Charles was able to see her in the phone box through a television link but she couldn't see him because the box didn't have a link so how on earth was he getting a picture without a link fitted to the box and why would that be done in a box in the back of beyond? ...more

This is a book that you either like or loathe! Most of us really enjoyed this witty parody of early 20th century rural melodramas, with its cleverly drawn characters, evocative names, and made-up language (mollocking, clettering, scranletting, etc.) Several of us had our favourite passages which we'd insisted on reading out to anyone within earshot. However, a couple of us hadn't been able to get into the story at all which took our star rating down to four. My only criticism would be that we di ...more
