Magnificent. Evocative,lyrical writing which sums up a place and people superbly. When I was a teenager I identified with Chris Guthrie so much, so I was thrilled to find that I still loved her.

This Scottish classic split the Wednesday group right down the middle. Three people couldn't finish it, finding the Doric language difficult, and the 'earthiness' offensive. Another couple of people were decidedly lukewarm in their reaction to it, while the rest of the group loved everything about it, the strong character of Chris Guthrie, the evocation of a disappearing way of life, and the tragic consequences of the First World War.
