I was very surprised to find a few truly terrifying scenes in this book that is most often billed as middle grade rather than YA. It was thoroughly enjoyable though and I almost jumped directly into the next in the series before ultimately deciding to save them for October of next year so I can enjoy them during spooky season. ;)

The title was the deciding factor for me in choosing to read this book. The Screaming Staircase...it sends chills down your spine just imagining such a thing! It didn't hurt that I'm on a total ghost kick right now, so I can't say no to a potentially spooky read!

This was really awesome. A solid middle reader that makes no attempt to creep into YA territory (no issues, no romance shoehorned in), it's set in an alternate London that is terrorized by ghosts. I liked that the mystery is serious (the ghosts kill people for real) and they take it seriously, but it's not too gory and still manages to have a quick pace and fun characters.

This scary book is about three kids that hunt and get rid of ghosts. It's scary, mysterious, and compelling. It has great mental images about how the ghosts affect the kids in different ways. ...more

England is in the grips of "The Troubles", when ghost haunt the living. Children are naturally skilled at finding and getting rid of ghosts and Lucy is no exception; she can hear ghosts. She was fired from her last job for no fault of her own. Desperate, she applies at Lockwood and Co., the only agency without adult supervision. High on the Creeptastic scale. An excellent audiobook!! NOT for the timid! ...more
