The title was the deciding factor for me in choosing to read this book. The Screaming Staircase...it sends chills down your spine just imagining such a thing! It didn't hurt that I'm on a total ghost kick right now, so I can't say no to a potentially spooky read!

The Screaming Staircase takes place in London where the ghosts - otherwise known as "visitors" - have become so numerous and problematic that several agencies have been established to rid the city of them. Lockwood & Co. consists of thre

There is a big “problem” in London. All sorts of ghosts and other paranormals have invaded. There is a curfew and many companies are making money selling iron products to repel the ghosts. In addition, there are many companies that employ children, with their natural psychic, to fight and get rid of the “problem”. Lockwood and Company is run by Anthony Lockwood who is himself a child. The only other employees are George and Lucy. After an unfortunate accident during a case Lockwood and Company a ...more

I loved Stroud's detailed descriptions of the world of ghost busting, with its use of rapiers, iron chai ...more

England is in the grips of "The Troubles", when ghost haunt the living. Children are naturally skilled at finding and getting rid of ghosts and Lucy is no exception; she can hear ghosts. She was fired from her last job for no fault of her own. Desperate, she applies at Lockwood and Co., the only agency without adult supervision. High on the Creeptastic scale. An excellent audiobook!! NOT for the timid! ...more

Loved it. A fun Halloween read. Older middle grade book but the banter and the story was totally enjoyable for any age over middle grade as well.

Stroud dies a great job creating an alternative world, and his characters are well developed. Solidly enjoyable.
