Only Kathi Appelt can make raccoons appealing. This one rolls out oh so slowly, but the language is lovely and the swamp and all its denizens come to life. Lyle Lovett's narration was smooth as sugar but I think I would've preferred the author reading.

Humorous, darling story with talking animals (although they cannot communicate with the humans). The story shifts between different points of view: Chap, a 6-ft tall 12-yo, who wants to save his Mom's pie shop in the swamp; 2 raccoons-Bingo & J'miah-who want to save the swamp; Sonny Boy, who wants to develop the swamp and make boatloads of money; and a sounder of hogs (17) who want to eat all the sugarcane in the swamp. A good story about preserving nature versus developing land.
