What Members Thought

I've read so many favorable reviews of this book in addition to the many lists it made it onto, including the Mock Newbery, that I knew I had to read it. Now that I've finished it I can see what all the fuss was about.
It took me a little bit of time to get into the story, as I wasn't sure exactly where it was going. Once I figured that out and got into it, I fell in love with this sweet story of the east Texas swamp and its human and animal inhabitants. Racoons whose duty is to be the official s ...more

This was a magical book for me; I listened to the audio version, narrated by Lyle Lovett. At first, I thought his voice was somewhat monotone, but either he became more animated, I got used to it, or I am imagining things. When Lovett voiced the "snip snap" and other sounds, it really became more enjoyable and seemed to take off. Because if it wins any awards this winter (and I think it could), you'll want to know

With the same beautiful writing as The Underneath, Kathi Appelt writes a much lighter animal adventure. I thought it was wonderful, and I think kids will say the same. It's truly magical when an abandoned DeSoto becomes so important to a story. I loved every page.

I read it and gave it 4 stars, I listened to it and gave it 5 stars.

This book was so much fun. I loved the adorable raccoons.

I fully recognize that this book is charmingly written, has a compelling plot, and probably has an audience who'll like it, but it goes in my very short list of books that I can't stand enough to finish. The narrator, the raccoons, the goofy names - it's actually too cute. I give up.
