While this held the same appeal as the Underneath, a melding of modern and ancient, realistic and fantastic stories, the story just dragged way too much. While the rumble rumble of the impending hogs was insistent, the action plodded along far too slowly. I love the voice the author gives both her characters and her story in general, that of a homespun, country tale with a bit of magic in it, but the Sugar Man slept through most of the tale, and I could have as well.

Eco-adventure featuring some terrific characters, including two raccoon scouts, a "sugar man," and a boy who has to save the swamp and the sugar cane from some evil developers. Think Carl Hiaasen with a bit of southern boogie-man tale. Lyle Lovett narrates the audio version with understated but solid narration. ...more

I listened to this book on audio books. It was excellent. The imagery, the language, the description were all wonderful. And the voice of Lyle Lovett made it even better.

Well, this book is everything I dislike--anthropomorphic, folksy, quirky, with over-the-top villains--but I recognize that it's a good book. And the raccoons really were kind of adorable. ...more

Practically perfect! Mystical swamp, precocious raccoons, a pack of wild hogs, gazillions of rattlesnakes, alligator wrestling, and a boy who lost his grandfather and struggles to save his home. Plus: the sugar man!

I fully recognize that this book is charmingly written, has a compelling plot, and probably has an audience who'll like it, but it goes in my very short list of books that I can't stand enough to finish. The narrator, the raccoons, the goofy names - it's actually too cute. I give up. ...more
