Three and half stars? Four? I liked this book, but I was always aware it was a STORY as opposed to something that could have happened to a real person.
I did love the details about daily life during the Depression, and enjoyed the Gary and Flint settings. The camp was awesome, um, in a way that you're probably not supposed to think that camps of homeless people are awesome. It's just that all those little details of a kid making a home from scratch are downright irresistible (one of my favorite ...more

Grades 4-7: If you have a chance to listen to the audio version of The Mighty Miss Malone, you're in for a treat: Bahni Turpin does a marvelous job narrating as Deza Malone. Christopher Paul Curtis shows that he is just as adept at bringing a female protagonist to life as he was with Buddy, Kenny, and Elijah, and that he is a master of engaging historical fiction. They are a family where the children believe in their talents and develop them because of the nurturing of their parents and caring teachers. The Malones are a family with unique traditions and a sense of humor that help them survive the bad times. The Malones can give hope to young people today who are facing similar hard ti

Thank you, Christopher Paul Curtis, for Deza Malone and the marvelous Malone family! Deza is a character who will live in my heart always alongside her new friends Scout Finch and Liesel Meminger. Deza will be in good company.
Thank you also for saying publicly that you are, "...horrified at the immoral, selfish calls to cut the paltry programs that have been set up to aid these young people." (302) The number of poor children in the United States in 1936 was a tragedy; fifteen million poor child ...more
