This is a great high-interest guy book. It's obviously autobiographical. I'd love to know how much is fiction and how much is real. Jack is a character you can't help but love, bloody nose and all. I enjoyed his friendship relationship with a pretty tough young lady. Of course the whole book revolved around Mrs. V. The adventures Jack had with her were hilarious. She is quite a memorable character. I would be much more excited about the Newbery potential of this book if Mrs. V. were not a dead r

The author can defintely tell an amusing story and creates some interesting characters. I didn't think it was in the same class as Inside Out and Back Again. It was good just not exceptional enough to win the Newbery.

Hmmm. Had to read this in a hurry b/c of the Newbery. I had just finished OK for Now, and see a lot of similarities in the books. However I liked OK for Now MUCH better. Darn Newbery committee...
I did read it. My first impression was that it was kind of a crude Richard Peck. Good to see a boy book in the top spot though.
Hilarious and heartwarming. I loved the characters of Norvelt!
Once again I wish Goodreads allowed you to give half stars. This book was cute- good story, great characters. The writing was decent, but not Newbery-worthy.
