This is a great high-interest guy book. It's obviously autobiographical. I'd love to know how much is fiction and how much is real. Jack is a character you can't help but love, bloody nose and all. I enjoyed his friendship relationship with a pretty tough young lady. Of course the whole book revolved around Mrs. V. The adventures Jack had with her were hilarious. The author can defintely tell an amusing story and creates some interesting characters. I didn't think it was in the same class as Inside Out and Back Again. It was good just not exceptional enough to win the Newbery. ...more

Hmmm. Had to read this in a hurry b/c of the Newbery. I had just finished OK for Now, and see a lot of similarities in the books. However I liked OK for Now MUCH better. Darn Newbery committee...

I did read it. My first impression was that it was kind of a crude Richard Peck. Good to see a boy book in the top spot though.

Once again I wish Goodreads allowed you to give half stars. This book was cute- good story, great characters. The writing was decent, but not Newbery-worthy.
