This book was recommended for children who loved the Harry Potter series in the Baker & Taylor magazine "Growing Minds." Because I have a lot of Potter fans in my library, I thought this would be a good addition to our collection. This book appears to be in the first in a trilogy and features three kids whose parents had to go into hiding 10 years prior. Kate, Michael and Emma have been moved from orphanage to orphanage never really settling in anywhere until they are sent to Cambridge Falls, wh

I listened to this one, and the whole time I was listening I kept thinking, it had a very "Potter-esque" feel to it. Orphan(s) lives fairly uneventful life for number of years, then suddenly they are "the chosen one(s)". Magical powers, meeting terrific and mythical beings who help them along the way. Lots of peril, adventure, humor and excitement. And of course evil, scary enemies who are underlings to a master Dire Magnus. Tried and true formula, but boy, does it work! This was a terrific read

One of the best fantasy novels that I've read in a long time. I was pleasantly surprised by how well Stephens could create a magical other world that would be intriguingly different than others we've discovered in books.

Jim Dale (narrator of Harry Potter audios) does a wonderful job in this first in a series. Kate, Michael, and Emma are orphans. On Christmas Eve numerous years ago, their parents got them out of bed and took them to an orphanage without explanation, saying they would be back for them. Years later, their parents still have not returned. The children discover a green book that sends to to a different time: The Emerald Atlas. The children discover that their parents are being held by an evil being

I thought this book was great. Perfect for advanced 3rd or 4th grade readers who are looking for a magical tale that isn't as scary as some options. Can't wait for September and the next one.

I was told by a friend to listen to this on audiobook and it turned out to be a great way to hear the story. Jim Dale is the narrator and he is fantastic. I think the narration by Dale really added a lot to the overall story for me. It is one I would recommend as an audiobook.
