The Emerald Atlas has much to recommend it; three smart, plucky orphans, who stick together no matter what, mysteries and magic, time travel, wizards, elves, dwarves, disingenuous, dangerous witches, chases, swordplay, daring escapes, and more. Imagine the Baudelaires from Lemony Snicket crossed with Harry Potter and the Mysterious Benedict Society and you have a fair idea of how the story develops. It is a complex story that rewards patient but astute readers. Perfect for sixth and seventh grad

Outstanding high fantasy. You will fall in love with Kate, Michael, and Emma. I read the last 120 pages in one sitting-- so exciting! The conclusion wrapped up nicely, and set the stage for the next book.
Kate’s mother’s last words to her were “I need you to keep your brother and sister safe…Remember your father and I love you very much. And we will all be together again. I promise.” Then she and Kate’s father were gone. Now ten years and twelve orphanages later, Kate, her sister Emma and her brother Michael are on their way to their last stop - Cambridge Falls, a town no one knows. Upon arriving they notice things at this orphanage are different: 1) they are the only children in the place; 2) th

Fantasy is my least favorite genre. I have loved some fantasy books...Harry Potter in particular. But I must say I became involved in this book and the travails and quest of the 3 children. The beginning with the children being secreted away really drew me in. All the characters came alive to me, and I truly cared about the success of Kate, Michael and Emma. The monsters were very scary and menacing! The author set up the forthcoming 2 books in the trilogy nicely. While I did think this book wel

So far it's really good - but A LOT like Harry Potter... And to make matters worse, Jim Dale is the reader, so I'm even more reminded of the HP books!
Despite the HP similarities, I enjoyed this one. Three children, abandoned by their parents when they were very young, have grown up in orphanages. At their latest home, they discover a mysterious book that sends them back into time. It turns out that they have magical powers and are part of a prophecy that has put them in grave danger. This thoroughly exciting fantasy is published for children and adults fortunate enough to find it. Three children raised mostly in orphanages are sure their parents will return although only the eldest remembers them. A magical book takes them back and forth in time where they begin to understand the mystery. Let's hope Book 2 appears soon.

Well told with dwarves, wizards, bravery and love, three children stumble towards their destiny and we get to go along.

An excellent fast paced fantasy adventure. Some of the characters in this book are fairly crazy, but they work together to create a fun and imaginative book. A great first book to a series! Can't wait for the next installment.
