I love this author. She writes strong characters into her stories about POC. I had high hopes for this one, originally looking at it for a summer book choice for my students. While I loved the idea of exposing kids to the history surrounding indentured servitude and the Civil War that brought out feelings of revenge amongst some southerners and Oklahoma’s famed land run thanks to the stealing of Native American lands, I wasn’t impressed by the writing itself. Action packed adventure as Will and his dad go north from Texas to claim land in the Oklahoma land rush. And excellent historical fiction story that also has character development and tough choices.
An important story about the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. Former slaves fighting for land of their own.
Story about a boy, Will, and his father, as they leave their land they work as sharecroppers to obtain their own land in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Land Rush in 1889 - many people journeyed to try and stake a claim to their own land. As they made their long journey, they met up with a man named Caesar along the way. I'd never heard about this event before - always good to learn more about our history. Enjoyable and quick read.

Historical fiction with many adventures keeps the reader turning the page. Will's story is exciting, informative, and endearing. The land rush of 1889 is the setting for this fast-paced read, with characters and animals that hearts will cheer for.
