What Members Thought
In 2009 I heard Candace Fleming say--I think she was in the middle of writing this book--that the more she learned about Amelia Earhart, the less she admired her. I think that comes across in the book, though I don't know whether I would have noticed it or thought about it if I hadn't remembered her saying that. Earhart is a moderately interesting person, but not always for the reasons one might want. I thought it was especially clear that Fleming wasn't thrilled by Earhart carrying on with a ma

we are on an Amelia kick at our house - Ellie just watched the movie and was fascinated. I also picked up a picture book at the bookfair for her. Didn't know about this, looks like it should be on our list!
This reads very much like Russel Friedman's 'The Photobiography of Abraham Lincoln.' I believe I like it just as much. I very much loved getting to know the truth behind the character 'Amelia Earhart'. From the good to the bad (not necessarily the best female flyer, but thanks to her publicity ...more

Excellent read. I did my 4th grade famous person report on her, and so I knew a little bit about her, but this was so well done. I learned more about her childhood and her married life. I liked how the information on her disappearance was thrown in after each chapter. I knew what had happened, but I still just wanted them to find her. I didn't know how many people had heard her radio in. Well done non-fiction. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Excellent, unique book. Stories of the search for Amelia are intertwined with her chronological biography. Even if you know what eventually happens to Amelia this book makes you hope that they find her. The author explains how writing this book was somewhat hard because of how many myths there are about Amelia. She had to work to sort fact from fiction and verify what was true. An amazing biography that reads like fiction.
I thought this book was very well done. Informative without being long and boring, and I feel it was very fair to Amelia Earhart. She has become quite a legend, and I certainly was surprised to find out that she wasn't the best pilot, but instead, understood her place in the aviation world. And she was willing to be a role model to women. Highly recommend.

An interesting read. But Newbery? I don't think so.

I've never read much about Amelia, but I found the facts about her life interesting and her disappearance heartbreaking.
